Egyptian National Railways (ENR) has awarded a €158m contract to Talgo for six inter-city trainsets through an open competitive process.

The contract involves the delivery of six Talgo trainsets each comprising a diesel-electric locomotive, a technical car or power car and 14 passenger cars.

It also includes integral maintenance of the vehicles for a minimum of eight years. The Spanish rolling stock manufacturer is expected to train local people to provide maintenance services.

Once delivered, the trains will be used to provide services on the main route of the country, connecting Alexandria, the Egyptian capital Cairo and the southern city of Aswan.

All six trains will be equipped with certified indoor climate control to ensure comfortable journeys in extreme temperatures, on-board Wi-Fi connectivity and infotainment systems with LED screens in each of the seats located in first class.

ENR launched the procurement process of the trains in August 2016 and the submission of bids was closed in October last year.

The official contract between ENR and Talgo is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, following which the Spanish rolling stock manufacturer will proceed with the project.

The Talgo trainsets are expected to be delivered during 2021 and 2022.

Last month, Talgo unveiled designs for the long-distance train ECx. The company is scheduled to deliver 23 ECx units to Deutsche Bahn under a contract that includes the option for delivery of up to 100 trainsets.
