Bombardier Transportation has secured a $669m contract to supply 113 Multilevel III passenger rail cars to the New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) in the US.

An option to deliver up to 886 additional cars is also included in the contract.

The company has already delivered 429 Multilevel I and II cars to NJ Transit under two contracts awarded in 2002 and 2010.

Bombardier Transportation products and engineering president Pierre-Yves Cohen said: “This contract will consist of cab cars, trailer cars, restroom-equipped trailer cars and new power cars that can replace locomotives and create self-propelled trains, providing NJ Transit with increased operational flexibility.

“Additionally, the Multilevel III cars will be fully compatible and interoperable with the Multilevel I and II cars.”

The Multilevel III cars will feature colour infotainment screens to offer real-time information to the passengers, USB charging ports near the seats, an onboard video surveillance system ensuring on-board security and motorised restroom doors.

The passenger rail cars will also have bicycle racks, an LED lighting system with automatic brightness control and wider vestibules to improve wheelchair accessibility.

All the vehicles will be equipped with a Positive Train Control system to ensure operational safety.

Since 1980, Bombardier has been a rolling stock partner of NJ Transit, one of the largest public transportation systems in the US.

It has supplied hundreds of single-level commuter coaches and multilevel cars, ALP-46 and ALP-46A electric locomotives, and ALP-45DP dual-power locomotives to the agency.

Bombardier has also been associated with the designing of NJ Transit’s RiverLINE light rail system between Camden and Trenton, it currently operates and maintains the system under a separate contract.
