China State Railway Group (China Railway) has awarded a $192m contract to Bombardier Transportation’s Chinese joint venture to provide maintenance service for high-speed train cars.

Under the contract, Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation (BST) will provide maintenance services for 280 train cars, including CRH1A-A, CRH1A, CRH1E and CRH380D. These 32 trains were manufactured by BST for China’s high-speed rail network.

Bombardier Transportation owns a 50% stake in BST while the remaining stake is held by CRRC Sifang Rolling Stock.

Bombardier Transportation China president Jianwei Zhang said: “Our China team’s expertise and experience across the portfolio enable us to support our customers with integrated solutions, including designing, manufacturing and maintenance service, and we look forward to contributing further to the development of China’s railway industry and keeping sustainable success in China.”

The BST plans to complete all the maintenance by the end of this year.

Over the last two years, BST has completed maintenance work for more than 1,200 high-speed train cars.

In November, Bombardier’s Chinese joint venture secured a CNY1.6bn ($248m) contract to build 112 new standard high-speed train cars for China’s high-speed rail network.

BST will build the CR300AF high-speed train car, which will have the capacity to run at speeds of up to 250km/h.

The train cars will be configured into 14 eight-car trainsets, ten of which are for Fujian Fuping Railway while the remaining trainsets will be placed at the Guangdong Meizhou-Shantou Passenger Dedicated Line.

In a separate development, China has unveiled a prototype of a new high-speed train that deploys magnetic levitation technology and can travel at a speed of 620km/hr.

The train, which has been developed by scientists at the Southwest Jiaotong University, has no wheels. It ‘hovers’ above the track with the help of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, reported The Independent.
