Bombardier Transportation has secured a contract to supply up to 50 TRAXX Multi-System (MS) locomotives to CD Cargo, the freight subsidiary of Czech Railways.

The first call off under the contract is an order for ten TRAXX MS3 locomotives, which feature the Last Mile function that enables to operate on non-electrified track sections.

Capable of operating on multiple railway electrification systems, the locomotives will be equipped with Baseline 3, the latest version of European Train Control System.

CD Cargo Board of Directors chairman Ivan Bednárik said: “The new TRAXX MS3 locomotive will be the most modern in our fleet.

“The order marks the entry of our new locomotive platform in the Central, Eastern and South Eastern European market.”

“Its powerful traction and cost-effective long-distance performance will support our international business strategy and be fully interoperable in both the domestic market and neighbouring countries.”

The new order expands Czech Railways’ TRAXX multi-system locomotive fleet to 54 vehicles.

The first ten vehicles will be utilised for freight and passenger movement across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria and Poland.

The addition of the new locomotives is also expected to increase the fleet’s operations to Slovenia and Croatia.

With car bodies delivered from Wroclaw in Poland and bogies from the facility in Siegen, all the locomotives will be assembled at Bombardier’s site in Kassel, Germany.

Bombardier Transportation Region Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Israel, CIS and China president Michael Fohrer said: “With this success in the Czech Republic, the order marks the entry of our new locomotive platform in the Central, Eastern and South Eastern European market.

“Once again, the TRAXX locomotive platform’s excellence and its track record of over 2,250 units sold have convinced another important customer.”
