A joint venture comprising Balfour Beatty, Vinci and Systra has won a contract from High Speed 2 to manage the construction of Old Oak Common station.

Old Oak Common is one of two London stations on the High Speed 2 (HS2) line.

The JV will be responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the station located in north-west London.

It will also deliver six underground platforms and eight platforms on the Great Western Main Line.

The station, which is estimated to cost approximately £1bn to complete, will be designed to handle 250,000 travellers per day.

After completion, Old Oak Common station could be among the top three busiest stations in the UK. It will offer direct services to eight of the ten largest cities of the UK and three major airports.

In addition to boosting rail capacity, the construction of the station is expected to create around 65,000 jobs, as well as 25,000 new homes in west London.

The joint venture’s project director Nigel Russell said: “This award reflects the combined strength of our joint venture and recognises our world-class capabilities in designing, managing and delivering complex infrastructure projects.

The project team will comprise of 140 people in a direct management team and 2,500 people as the workforce.

In 2017, Balfour Beatty and VINCI JV were awarded a contract to construct the line that will head north past Birmingham Airport and into the new Curzon Street station in Birmingham.
