Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Arriva has secured a contract from the Czech Ministry of Transport to operate four express rail lines.

The €45m contract covers four lines from Prague to the cities of Tanvald, Novy Bor, Rakovnik and Ceske Budejovice.

Starting from December 2019, Arriva will operate the lines for three years, with the option to extend the contract by a further two years.

Arriva will strengthen its current train fleet in the Czech Republic from 8 to 35 units.

It will procure 27 newly refurbished trains from its parent company Deutsche Bahn. The trains will be equipped with comfortable seats, Wi-Fi and power outlets.

Arriva has been present in the Czech Republic’s rail market since 2013 and currently operates the urban rail services in Prague, as well as a long distance service to Slovakia.

Last month, it started operating the S49 line in Prague, which will run for ten years.
