Rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has introduced its new-generation tram Citadis X05, which features the company’s SRS charging system and Citadis Ecopack energy storage system.

The vehicle was commissioned to be used on the newly inaugurated Cadam-Magnan section of the tramway line 2 for France’s Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur.

The new charging and energy storage systems will enable the trams to operate without connecting to the overhead contact lines.

The SRS system is capable of recharging the tram when it stops at a station. This energy is stored in the onboard Citadis Ecopack devices, which use it for the journey.

“It’s a tremendous source of pride for Alstom and its teams to participate in this project, a catalyst for innovation and an international showcase of French railway sector expertise.”

Alstom France president Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud said: “It’s a tremendous source of pride for Alstom and its teams to participate in this project, a catalyst for innovation and an international showcase of French railway sector expertise.

“A new generation of trams, a new charging system, the Nice tram will also be the first connected tram as of Spring 2019 with a tram-to-ground Wi-Fi communication system.”

The 44m-long vehicles also feature LED lighting systems, large individual seats, 40% window surface, travel information on extra-wide screens, as well as double-doors that ensure smooth accessibility.

The Citadis X05 trams are capable of carrying 10% more passengers than their previous versions. The upgrades on the vehicle are expected to result in a 20% reduction in preventive maintenance costs.

To date, Alstom has delivered more than 2,500 Citadis trams to about 50 cities across 20 countries.

The company noted that nine of Alstom’s 12  French sites are associated with the design and manufacture of tramway line 2 for the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur.
