Alstom has signed a contract with Polish long-distance train services provider PKP Intercity to install WiFi devices on its Express InterCity Premium (EIP) trains.

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom’s teams in Warsaw will install the devices on the EIP trains, which were originally built by the company as Pendolino trains (ED250).

The scope of the zl31.7m ($8.66m) contract also includes maintenance works of the EIP fleet for five years.

The first WiFi-equipped vehicle offering free wireless internet is expected to become operational later this year.

Poland Ministry of Infrastructure Undersecretary of State Andrzej Bittel said: “The installation of wireless internet in the EIP depots will start in September. In August this year, pilot tests of WiFi devices in Pendolino were successfully carried out.

“Pendolino trains will enrich the number of trains equipped with internet access. At this point, the WiFi network is available in 171 PKP Intercity cars and 40 combined sets.

“The carrier plans that by the end of 2018 WiFi will be available in 200 conventional cars and this number will be constantly increased.”

Besides the delivery and maintenance of the WiFi-upgraded Pendolino vehicles, Alstom will provide necessary training to the PKP Intercity staff to ensure smooth operations.

As part of the contract, PKP Intercity and Alstom, which will serve as a telecommunications operator, agreed to conclude appropriate data entrustment agreement to protect user data under current applicable laws.
