Alstom has delivered the first five Coradia Polyvalent Léman Express trains to SNCF Technicentre for the Franco-Swiss cross-border Léman Express network.

The company will deliver five trains each month until the end of November, with commercial service scheduled to start from mid-December.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes placed an order worth €160m ($177m) with Alstom for 17 Coradia Polyvalent trains in July 2015.

The trains to be delivered for the CEVA line have been configured in their suburban version. Each 72m-long train is equipped with 204 seats and capable of running at a speed of up to 140km/h.

Designed for cross-border links, the trains can operate on multiple types of network voltages.

Additionally, the Coradia Polyvalent Léman Express trains feature low floors and seven doors to ensure smooth passenger flows and reduce station stoppage times.

All seats inside the trains are fitted with individual reading lights and electrical sockets. They also have dedicated bicycle and luggage areas.

Meanwhile, Alstom’s engineers have been training SNCF drivers for these new trains since mid-August.

Last month, the region ordered 10 additional trains for Léman Express by exercising a €70m option.

Under the contract awarded by SNCF to Alstom in October 2009, Alstom had delivered 348 trains to 9 French regions. The fleet covered a total of 50 million km in commercial service.
