Alstom has completed its first all-electric locomotive at its facility in Madhepura, Bihar, India.

The facility is 74% owned by the company and 26% by Indian Railways.

The first locomotive is part of a €3.5bn order consisting of 800 electric double-section locomotives signed in 2015.

The agreement contributes to the Indian Ministry of Railways’ public-private partnership programme to modernise the rail infrastructure of the country.

In line with the government’s and Indian Railways’ target towards 100% electrification, the new locomotives are set to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

“We continue to stay committed to developing India’s infrastructure needs, improving the quality of services to citizens and investing in the nation’s economy.”

Alstom chairman and CEO Henri-Poupart Lafarge said: “Our operations in India are paramount to our business globally and we continue to stay committed to developing India’s infrastructure needs, improving the quality of services to citizens and investing in the nation’s economy.
