Alstom and Barletta Heavy Division have signed an €80m contract to upgrade the signalling systems on the Red and Orange subway lines of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the US.

Under the contract, Alstom will replace the existing relay-based train controls with its integrated vital processor interlocking (iVPI), a microprocessor-based train control system.

Additionally, Alstom will supply the latest generation of digital audio frequency technology and digital signalling AFTC5 track circuits.

The contract includes the delivery of Alstom’s new Model 5F wayside switch machines and LED signal modernisation works at the Southwest corridor of the Orange line.

“We are honoured to have been selected by MBTA to contribute to the increase in capacity and reliability of Boston’s Red and Orange lines.”

A completely wired central instrument housed at Ashmont station and Columbia Junction on the Red line will also be delivered.

Alstom North America senior vice-president Jérôme Wallut said: “Along with our partner, Barletta, we are honoured to have been selected by MBTA to contribute to the increase in capacity and reliability of Boston’s Red and Orange lines.

“We are very pleased to be part of this project and to support MBTA in their efforts to deliver the transit system that MBTA customers and the Greater Boston community expect.”

The signalling upgrade works on the Orange and Red lines will enable MBTA to increase the frequency of operations and optimise fleet performance.

Alstrom’s facilities in Grain Valley and Warrensburg in Missouri, as well as Hornell in New York, will manufacture the switch machines, interlockings and track circuits for the project.

The overall works are due for completion in 2022.
