Switzerland-based ABB has secured a more than $42m contract to deliver traction equipment to Indian Railways to improve operational efficiency.

Under the terms of the contract, ABB will supply converters for electric locomotives to Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi.

The converters will be custom designed for Indian Railways and manufactured at ABB’s locomotive applications facility in Nelamangala, near Bengaluru.

ABB said that its traction solution is based on the latest technology and will increase the reliability of rail operations, as well as support is sustainable transport by moving from diesel trains to electric vehicles.

More than 250 Indian Railways’ electric locomotives are driven by ABB traction equipment.

Additionally, more than 20% of three-phase electric locomotives in India are equipped with ABB traction converters.

ABB India managing director Sanjeev Sharma said: “We are privileged to work with DLW and Indian Railways on the electrification of the domestic rail network in India, the fourth largest rail network in the world.

“This order will help to improve rail efficiency so that passengers travelling in India will reach their destination on time and in comfort.”

In September last year, ABB secured a $100m order to supply train traction equipment to rolling stock manufacturer Stadler.

Under this contract, 160 Stadler trains will be equipped with traction technology.
