TTInspect / Aarsleff Rail A/S

Automatic Vision Inspection Systems for Trains

Industriholmen 2,
2650 Hvidovre,

TTInspect has provided full automatic inspection systems for trains for almost 15 years. In 2015, TTInspect became a part of Aarsleff Rail A/S.

Aarsleff Rail designs, plans and implements infrastructure projects for the railroad, including civil engineering constructions for the railway network. We specialise in trackwork, welding work, earth work, interlocking and high voltage, traction current, structures and railway safety.

Inspection systems for every component, from brake shoes to rails

TTInspect specialises in automatic inspection systems for trains and rail components that replace manual visual inspection using advanced sensor and computer technology.

TTInspect develops, builds and installs systems for a broad range of rail components, including brake shoes and discs, wheels, pantograph and third rail shoe, clearance gauges, catenary, switches and crossings, sleepers and rails, as well as the whole train body and its sides, roof, front and rear.

Meet us at the annual Innotrans Trade Exhibition in Berlin from the 20-23 September, where members of the Danish RailWay Group exhibit together with the Danish Export Association in hall 6.1.
TTInspect’s ABI 6 system is built of modules and, if necessary, the individual spare parts can easily be replaced. This does not require any particular technical skills.
Our ABI 6 system for brake pad inspection evaluates six brake pads at the maximum speed of 100 km/hour. The system works at its best when placed, for example, in tunnels.
TTInspect’s wheel monitoring system is installed directly on rails. Here, we have installed 21 accelerometers but can supply variants of the system down to seven accelerometers.
A brake disc with thermal damage due to overheating from the brake pads is easily detected by TTInspect’s system.
Aarsleff Rail possesses the necessary skills required for all kinds of infrastructure solutions for the railroad.

We use standard industrial components for our systems as much as possible, making it easier to find replacements if necessary.

In the event of irregularities, the company’s self-monitoring systems will notify those in charge and enable intervention before system failure occurs.

Most software irregularities can be corrected by our technicians logging into the system remotely, while hardware for our modular solutions require minimal technical skills to replace.

Intelligent sensors and cameras free up manpower

The growing market for service and maintenance of the railway network requires considerable manpower. TTInspect’s full automatic inspection systems are based on intelligent sensors that free up manpower.

The systems’ cameras and sensors ensure 24 hours of consistent inspection year-round, together with immediate registration and data evaluation that quickly enables desired actions.

In addition, the system provides and stores information for statistics, and eventually allows for predictive maintenance.

Automatic brake pad inspection system

TTInspect plays an active part in the development of automatic inspection systems for the trains of the Danish railway company DSB. The first automatic brake pad inspection system was implemented in 2006, and in 2011 it was replaced by a new system due to the geometry of the brakes of the new IC4 trains.

The first system paid for itself three times, and saved about 25% on the consumption of brake pads. Accidents, in which the brake pads fell off and the shoe was pressed into the disc, rarely occurred.

Today, DSB has four scanners that send input directly to the maintenance system’s SAP server. Defined alarm limits automatically activate instructions, and DSB can follow each brake pad from mounting to replacement. Thus, DSB is able to forecast brake pad consumption and coordinate new purchases when appropriate. Abnormal wear due to hanging or deactivated brakes will set off an alarm, which is linked directly to the responsible supervisor by SMS or to a PDA.

With regard to safety, the Danish Railway Inspectorate has considered TTInspect’s automatic inspection system to be equal to manual visual inspection.

Automatic wheel monitoring system for trains

TTInspect has revamped an older automatic wheel monitoring system for the trains of DSB’s Copenhagen urban rail network. The system is almost 14 years old, but TTInspect’s update will prolong the system by at least ten years.

DSB’s system is equipped with accelerometers, wheel sensors, a signal handling processor, and a computer that distributes data directly to DSB’s maintenance system. Work instructions are generated on the basis of the system’s readings.

The system’s RFID reader identifies each train and its formation when the train is passing the reader. Via the wheel sensors, the system is able to identify the condition of each single wheel, allowing the supervisor to take immediate action to prevent damage to the train. Thus, breakdowns and cost-intensive repair works can be avoided.
