With the LBC series, Bel Power Solutions targets for the first time the market for auxiliary power supplies in railway vehicles. However, Bel is not new to this industry: under the MELCHER brand the company is at home in the international railway market with innovative DC / DC and AC / DC solutions for more than 40 years.
Modularity, scalability, small dimensions, low weight and a very high efficiency are just some of the features of the new battery chargers. As basic technology for the power electronics, Bel relies on already available three-phase AC / DC modules with forced air-cooling and an output power capability of 4kW per module. Up to three of these modules can be integrated into a common shelf, together with a central control and distribution module, thus providing a total power of up to 12kW.
The LBC battery chargers operate at 400V AC, three-phase AC grid and provide nominal output voltages in the range of 24V up to 110VDC, so that all rated battery voltages used in railway vehicles can be covered.
Thanks to the compact outline dimensions of approx 360mm x 160mm x 600mm and a weight of less than 25kg (depending on the output power configuration), the chargers are suitable for an universal integration into given installation areas such as electronics cabinets or spaces in the underfloor area. The battery chargers are self-cooling with integrated fans.
As a standard, the LBC battery chargers are equipped with interfaces for battery temperature sensors, an internal parallel operation capability by decoupling diodes and also with integrated input fuses. The devices meet the requirements for the railway standard EN 50155, are EMC-protected according to EN 50121-3-2 and also fulfil the fire and smoke demands of EN 45545. The battery chargers operate in a temperature range of -25°C to 55°C without any derating.
Optionally, a communication interface allows the connection of the battery chargers to a train host system for signalling and remote control, based on CAN or Ethernet communication. A RS-485 based service interface features the possibility to update the device firmware and to configure the system.
A very high reliability of the single modules leads to fewer failure rates and therefore the service and maintenance cost of the whole system are quite low.
