The incident, which was caught on CCTV and featured in the BBC programme ‘Caught Red Handed’, perfectly demonstrated the attack-resistant qualities of Pickersgill-Kaye’s multipoint locks and the two high-security performance interlocking doors manufactured by Warrior Doors.
When the silent alarm was triggered by the quick thinking owner, the store filled with a thick vapour making visibility impossible. One robber found the button to open the internal door to the exit, but when his fellow assailant got through the door and it shut, they found themselves imprisoned in the airlock area between the two Warrior-made doors.
When the silent alarm was triggered by the quick thinking owner, the store filled with a thick vapour, making visibility impossible. One robber found the button to open the internal door to the exit, but when his fellow assailant got through the door and it shut, they found themselves imprisoned in the airlock area between the two Warrior-made doors.
Helping to trap the robbers in the shop was Pickersgill-Kaye’s HS170 three-point lock for access control systems, which has an automatic deadlocking function with a 25mm bolt throw and high-security cylinder guard.
Despite repeated and frenzied attacks on the doors and locks, which had been mortised in to help provide a visually appealing look for the retailer, the two robbers were unable to force their way out of the airlock area before Armed Response Police Units arrived on the scene.
However, the outside door was so secure that the police had to call the fire brigade for assistance, but even with all the heavy equipment at the disposal of the emergency services it took a considerable amount of time to prise the door open so that the police could get in and arrest the two men trapped inside.
Warrior Doors managing director Brett Barratt said: "We’ve sourced our locks for high-security entrances from Pickersgill-Kaye for several years, because we’ve found them to be consistently reliable in the quality of products they supply and the service they provide.
"The design and strength of their locks complements Warriors high security door designs and performance standards perfectly. We always use them for high value retail and critical national infrastructure projects."
Available in both surface-mounted and mortise versions, Pickersgill-Kaye’s portfolio of single and multipoint locks are designed and manufactured entirely in the UK to the highest technical standards and aesthetically pleasing to complement the modern workplace, such as jeweller shops.
The range of locks, bolts and fittings has been specifically developed to meet exacting standards of physical attack but maintain safe and easy exit. The products are manufactured to the highest specifications and tested to European BS EN standards for panic and emergency exit, as well as undergoing independent blast testing, cycle testing in excess of one million cycles and being fire tested, to BS EN standards, as part of a secure doorset.
Pickersgill-Kaye’s locks are designed on state-of-the-art CAD software and are subjected to extensive and challenging testing on key operation, lock construction and overall durability and resistance to attack, in order to satisfy the operational requirements of national and international market sectors. Approvals include certification to LPS 1175 Issue 7 Levels SR3 and SR4 and government standards.
