Darwin team

A five-member team, including two Televic Rail engineers, won the first prize at Rail Delivery Group’s open data ‘Hackathon’ last week, for creating a customer-focused passenger information app.

The mission of the competing teams was to create an innovative passenger information app using Darwin and Network Rail data. Along with their team members, Televic’s engineers showcased their expertise of real-time data sources, including Darwin and Network Rail data feeds, as they produced the winning passenger information application.

The app combines journey planning with real-time disruption information, and links up with users’ calendars, which makes it easier for passengers to notify contacts if they are running late. The team’s creation received acclaim for its customer-focused approach.

David Brown, RDG lead on transparency and chief executive of The Go-Ahead Group said: "All the teams participating in the event produced some outstanding ideas, but the winning team stood out for a clear focus on personalized customer service, pulling together different sources of data to communicate train delays and provide information at times of disruption. We congratulate them on a proposal that aspired to make people’s journey better, they are worthy winners."

The competition was organised by Rail Delivery Group, the organisation that brings together the owners of the UK’s passenger train operating companies, freight operators and Network Rail.
