Transurb Technirail Wins Driving Simulator Contract for Cairo Metro, Egypt

Cairo Metro was the first ever metro network in Africa. Today, the estimated 17 million inhabitants of Cairo have access to three metro lines, with a fourth line currently under construction.

Anticipating this boost in capacity, Metro Cairo planned the integration of a new driving simulator in its training center to bring its standards into the 21st century. The simulator will be dedicated to the training of drivers of the Metro Line 1 from Helwan to New El Marg.

In December 2011, Transurb Technirail won the international tender issued by Metro Cairo from competitors in Spain, France, Germany and Australia.

Transurb Technirail will provide Metro Cairo with two training solutions:

  • A driving simulator to train and improve driving skills of Cairo Metro Line 1 drivers
  • A CAL (computer-assisted learning) area, which aims to train personnel on the elementary functions of Metro Cairo’s rolling stock and on how to handle malfunctions

“We are very proud to have won this project in Egypt; it fits in our long-term client relationship philosophy. Secondly, we strongly believe in the opportunities and possibilities for companies operating in the field of public transport on the African Continent,” said Yannick Gilis Transurb Technirail’s simulation department manager.

“By adopting a modern driving simulator, Cairo Metro chooses a path which will improve the quality of its daily operations, for many years to come.”

With the first development phase currently under way, the simulator and CAL will be installed in Cairo in 12 months time.
