Voith Turbo Becomes Systems Supplier Thanks to Maxima® and Gravita®

The Maxima 40 CC is the first vehicle that has been designed and produced exclusively by Voith Turbo. At InnoTrans 2006, the world’s most powerful diesel-hydraulic locomotive will be exhibited on the outside display area. But there is more: Voith Turbo is presenting a complete locomotive program. The Maxima family is rounded off by the Maxima 30 CC with a slightly lower engine output, and the entirely new Gravita product family will cover the full range of shunting and light mainline locomotives.

The Maxima has been designed as a heavy mainline locomotive especially for cross-border traffic; the future fields of application for the Gravita locomotive family are regional rail and shunting operations.

While the Maxima family will be fitted with the new LS 640 Turbosplit® Transmission that easily copes with the 2 750 kW output of the 12-cylinder engine or even the 3 600 kW of the 16-cylinder engine, the Gravita family features several output variations. The modularity ranges from 400 kW for the two-axle Gravita 5 B up to 2 200 kW for the Gravita 20 BB. The Voith locomotive program covers a total of five different locomotive types with two, three and four axles.

With these two locomotive families, Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik intends to gain a firm foothold for hydrodynamic power transmission in the market. To achieve this, Voith Turbo adapts a philosophy that aims at increasing the reliability and availabil-ity of rail vehicles by deliberately reducing the complexity of the technical system to a reasonable and economical level.

Against this background, the components installed in the vehicle are intended to operate at approximately 90 percent of their performance limit. This creates not only reserves necessary for certain types of application, but also reduces the over-all life cycle costs.
