US railroad operator Union Pacific is to invest $98m and $27m this year to enhance the transportation infrastructure in the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma, respectively.

The investment will increase rail operating efficiency in both regions, as well as improve safety.

The company’s investment in Arkansas covers a range of initiatives, including about $81m to maintain railroad track, $8m to improve signal systems and $8m to maintain or replace bridges.

Of the total funding, $23m will be used in the rail line between Gould and the border with Louisiana to replace 44 miles of rail and repair the surfaces at 65 road crossings.

Other projects include investing $9.7m in the rail line between Knoxville and Van Buren to replace 65,251 railroad ties and install 28,107t of rock ballast, as well as $7.1m in the rail line between Hope and Texarkana to replace 50,383 railroad ties and install 21,910t of rock ballast.

In Oklahoma, the $23m investment will be used to maintain railroad track, $634,000 to improve signal systems and $3m to maintain or replace bridges in the state.

Future projects in Oklahoma include an $13m investment in the rail line between Big Cabin and Rentiesville to replace 84,820 railroad ties and install 40,249t of rock ballast.

Approximately $3m will be invested in the rail line between the Oklahoma/Kansas line and Wagoner to replace 23,939 railroad ties and install 332t of rock ballast.
