Skanska has been awarded a SEK 398m ($53.73m) contract from the Swedish Transport Administration to expand a section of the Hallsberg-Degerön freight line in Sweden.

Under this contract, Skanska will upgrade the existing single-track railway with low capacity to double-track with increased capacity.

Through the expansion to double-track, the increased capacity is expected to relieve the main tracks from freight traffic.

This turnkey contract includes the construction of 13km-long double-track railway, seven bridges and 9km of roads and noise-reducing measures.

The construction works of double-track railway line is expected to create a total of 120 jobs. Planning of the project will start soon and it is expected to be completed in October 2019.

Meanwhile, Skanska along with its joint venture partners Traylor Brothers and J.F. Shea Construction has started the construction of Metro Purple Line extension.

Earlier in July, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) awarded a $1.6bn design and construction contract to Skanska led joint venture Company.

Under this project, the company will carry out the 6.3km extension of Purple Line, in addition to the installation of train control and signals, communications, traction power supply and distribution, as well as new fare collection systems on the existing Metro Rail system.

The first segment of works is expected to be completed in 2023.
