Fibre-optic sensing technology developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is being installed on metro lines in Singapore.

In February, PolyU signed an agreement with SMRT, with a trial run was completed in June.

As well as installation of this network in tracks to monitor the trains, sensors are also installed in in-service trains to monitor the tracks the trains run on.

A total of six groups of sensors will be installed in tracks and trains of the east west line and north south line of SMRT in Singapore.

PolyU photonics chair professor and department of electrical engineering head professor Tam Hwa-Yaw said: “This PolyU technology will help enhance the performance of metro systems through an advanced predictive monitoring and maintenance regime, which is now the best practice in the railway industry and a global trend.

“This also shows how an academic institution in Hong Kong can develop leading technology in the world through collaboration with the industry.”

PolyU’s new system provides continuous, in-service monitoring of tracks and helps improve service reliability through quick identification of defects and subsequent correction.

The use of fibre-optic sensing network on tracks and in the trains is a mode of maintenance for two of the components for a railway.

SMRT Singapore deputy director Dr Tan Chee Keong said: “With much foresight, SMRT is the first in the world to have adopted this preventive monitoring system, enabled by the cutting-edge railway technologies pioneered by PolyU.

“I am sure this optical fibre sensing network installed in both the tracks and running trains will enhance the operation of our metro lines.”

Installation of the permanent monitoring system in the two lines is expected to be completed early next year.

PolyU will provide training to SMRT staff in operating the system, and also offer maintenance and technical support for five years after commissioning of the system.
