The UK’s Network Rail is set to begin a project to extend platform 2 at Northallerton station in North Yorkshire to help accommodate new trains.

The project costs more than £900,000 and will see the extension of platform 2 by 20m.

Network Rail principal programme sponsor Aidan Talbott said: “The work we are carrying out at Northallerton station is an important part of our Railway Upgrade Plan and will allow all carriages of the new Azuma trains to fit into the station.

“It is a vital piece of enhancement work to the railway and will bring even greater benefits for passengers travelling on the East Coast Main Line.”

Virgin’s new Azuma trains are planned to be introduced on the East Coast Main Line next year.

Network Rail stated that there will be no disruption to passenger services when the upgrade works take place, while the Boroughbridge Road will be temporarily closed.

The latest project follows extension of another platform that is underway at present at Durham station.

This platform will be extended by 40m to accommodate the new trains.

Virgin Trains spokesperson said: “Our Virgin Azuma trains, which will be introduced from next year, will help us to transform the customer experience, creating more capacity, and faster and more comfortable journeys on our east coast route.”

The railway upgrade plan is part of Network Rail's investment programme for railways in the UK, comprising two-thirds of the company’s £40bn spending priorities for the five years up to 2019.
