Mobile ticketing service provider Masabi has entered into a deal to improve the mobile ticketing system across all Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail and boat routes in the US.

The deal aims to improve MBTA’s existing mobile-ticketing system.

To be launched by later this year, the improved ticketing-system includes mobile wallets such as MasterPass and ApplePay that will streamline the purchase process.

The updated system will allow favourite and recent trips to be saved on the home screen.

"This innovative app makes the fare collection process easier and more efficient for both commuter rail riders and the MBTA."

Electronic ticket validation will also be allowed for improved security.

MBTA chief administrator Brian Shortsleeve said: "Working closely with our mTicket partners, the MBTA is stepping up its efforts to leverage cutting-edge technology to improve our customers’ experience.

In 2012, MBTA and Masabi launched the first full smartphone commuter rail ticketing system in the US.

More than a third of tickets on the MBTA’s commuter rail are currently being purchased on smartphones.

The newly signed contract will also help MBTA to cut costs in half from the initial pilot programme, representing significant cost savings that can be reinvested in MBTA operations.

Masabi noted that its mobile ticketing technology has been used by various transit agencies such as New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles’ Metrolink, New Orleans’ RTA, London’s Thames Clippers, and the transit agency in Athens, Greece.

Masabi recently provided a new ticket validation database and inspection app to UK-based train operator Abellio Greater Anglia.
