Global consulting and technology company Indra has launched a new communications network for Argentina's integrated rail network that connects Buenos Aires with other urban and suburban towns.

The installation follows the award of a €18.9m contract to Indra by public rail operator Operadora Ferroviaria Sociedad del Estado in 2014.

Indra has installed a Tetra-based digital communications system along the line as part of the deal, which will allow voice and data transmission via digital radio networks.

The Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) rail network will make use of the new facility, and currently operates more than 200 stations across the region

AMBA provides services for the Sarmiento, Mitre, San Martín, Belgrano Sur and Roca lines, which carry a combined total of 1.2 million passengers daily.

The new communications system will ensure the transfer of voice and data without losses during normal rail operations and also during emergency situations, thereby improving the coordination, safety and operations of transportation services.

Indra prevoiusly implemented the ticketing and access control technology for Buenos Aires Rail.

The company was also awarded a contract by the Chilean railroad company Grupo EFE in 2015.

The deal saw Indra improve Grupo EFE’s virtual communications network, which included the supply, installation, configuration, testing and maintenance of a multiservice IP / MPLS communications network for the Santiago-Concepción region, covering more than 550km of railways and their surroundings.
