Indian Railways is set to install a new system on-board locomotive cabins in a bid to increase safety and reduce train accidents.

The new Loco Cab Video and Voice Recording System (LCVR) is being developed by Diesel Locomotive Works and comprises video cameras with day / night vision capabilities, microphones and a digital video recorder that will facilitate detailed analysis after any train accident.

The video cameras are equipped with face recognition software that is linked to an alarm system, which will alert the driver and traffic control centres to any possible threats.

Diesel Locomotive Works is developing the new LCVR in collaboration with Indian Railways' research and design unit, known as the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Twelve LCVR systems will be fitted onto locomotives by July as part of an initial pilot project.

Diesel Locomotive Works chief design engineer A K Singh was quoted by Millenniumpost.in as saying that the new system will also monitor the activities of driver in the loco cabin.

Additionally, the company has developed a new system known as 'remote monitoring and management of locomotive and trains' (REMMLOT), which will allow greater locomotive-based surveillance across the country.

REMMLOT will connect all operating trains to a centralised server-based management system via GSM network communication and GPS in order to provide real-time location data for the locomotives.

Diesel Locomotive Works manufactured 333 diesel locomotives and one electric locomotive during the last fiscal year.
