CD Cargo

Siemens has secured a contract from Czech rail transport company CD Cargo for the delivery of five Vectron MS locomotives.

With a maximum output of 6,400kW and a top speed of 160km/h, the new multisystem Vectrons locomotives can be operated in Hungary, Romania and all countries neighbouring the Czech Republic.

They will be used for transporting automobiles by rail between Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany, in addition to other international routes.

Under this order, all locomotives will be equipped with train control systems for these countries, as well as the European train control system (ETCS).

CD Cargo Board chairman Ivan Bednárik said: "The decision to purchase new interoperable locomotives comes from a long-term strategy of CD Cargo and fulfils one of the company’s key objectives, which is expanding to foreign markets.

"If we want to sustain our current market share and our position as one of the largest European carriers, fleet renewal is necessary, and these locomotives are the first but not last investment in this area.

Deliveries of the locomotives are scheduled to begin this June and expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Siemens will build the new locomotives at its Munich-Allach plant in Germany.

The new contract follows a recent order won by Siemens from Alpha Trains Luxembourg to deliver six Vectron type multisystem locomotives.
