Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation (BST) has secured a CNY2.4bn ($381m) contract from China Railway Corporation (CRC) to deliver 15 additional CRH380D high-speed trains.

The new eight-car trainsets will be an integral part of the country’s developing high-speed railway network.

BST secured an initial order in September 2009 for 70 CRH380Ds, the first of which was delivered this March to CRC.

A joint venture between Bombardier and CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock, BST is one of China’s leading manufacturers of railway passenger cars and rolling stock.

"We are confident to deliver more next-generation rail equipment with the most advanced rail technology for China from within China."

The company started delivering the first of its next-generation trains at the beginning of this year.

Bombardier China president Jianwei Zhang said: "China now has the world’s longest operational track mileage and largest number of high-speed trains. This market represents a tremendous opportunity where we have been successful by offering innovative and highly reliable products.

The CRH380D is a new-generation, high-speed electric multiple unit with a maximum operating speed of 380km/h.

The new aluminium-bodied cars are powered by Bombardier ECO4 technology and Mitrac propulsion and control system, both supplied by Bombardier CPC Propulsion System (BCP), a separate Bombardier Chinese joint venture.

The CRH380D EMUs are equipped with VIP, first-class and second-class seats, in addition to a dining car.

Engineering and assembly of these trainsets will be done at BST’s facility in Qingdao and while components and management support will be provided by Bombardier centres in Europe.

In July, French industrial battery manufacturer Saft has received its first electric multiple unit (EMU) contract from BST for its trains operating on China’s high-speed rail services.

The deal saw Saft deliver 100 MRX fully integrated, onboard, nickel-based battery systems to be equipped on 20 new ‘Project 807’ EMUs currently being built for 250km/h rail services operated by CRC.
