Infrastructure manager Banedanmark has selected a joint venture (JV) of Siemens and Per Aarsleff, a Denmark-based infrastructure contractor, as the preferred bidder to conduct the first phase of the Danish railway electrification programme.

Tthe companies are currently in final negotiations with Banedanmark and a contract is likely to be finalised by the end of this month.

Work under the first phase of the project will include electrification of the 57km-long stretch between Esbjerg and Lunderskov, which is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2016.

The electrification work will also be carried out on Køge-Naestved, Ringsted-Rødby and the new Copenhagen-Ringsted lines.

According to Banedanmark, the Aarsleff/Siemens JV has offered the most economical bid for the contract, beating offers from ASB consortium (Alstom, Bravida Danmark and SPL Powerlines), Strukton/Balfour Beatty and Obrascon Huarte Lain/TSO.

Denmark is planning to electrify 1,300km of the network by 2026 through the kr28.5bn ($4.3bn) Togfonden DK fund.

The contract includes a further electrification of the Fredericia-Aalborg, Aalborg-Frederikshavn, Vejle-Struer and Roskilde-Kalundborg lines.
