The Western Australian (WA) Government has unveiled plans for a $2bn Forrestfield-Airport Link, which will connect Forrestfield to the Perth’s CBD.

The link will offer connectivity to the airport and reduce the rail journey from Perth’s eastern suburbs to the city to 20min.

"This Forrestfield-Airport Link project represents a real game changer in terms of public transport in this city."

Plans also include stations near the domestic and international terminals, as well as a bus-train interchange station in Forrestfield.

Transport minister Dean Nalder said that the rail line would become the longest section of underground rail in Perth.

WA Premier Colin Barnett sid: "This Forrestfield-Airport Link project represents a real game changer in terms of public transport in this city.

"For the first time, people will be able to catch a train to the airport and importantly, this will also open up a brand new rail corridor to the eastern suburbs and foothills."

The project was a key liberal party promise in the lead up to the 2013 election. It is projected to serve 20,000 people a day in 2021, increasing to more than 30,000 by 2030.

The rail link was expected to initially cost $1.9bn, with an extra $300m added for contingencies and escalation factors.

Construction will begin in 2016 and is scheduled for completion in 2020. Community information sessions with relevant local government areas are expected to begin next month.
