Rail Services Returning to Normal After China Quake

13 May 2008

Almost all rail lines operating in and out of China's Sichuan Province have resumed service following yesterday's 7.9-magnitude earthquake.

The quake damaged bridges on the Baoji-Chengdu line and cut power to 13 stations, with passenger trains bound south from Baoji being suspended at Xi'an, an official with the Xi'an railway bureau told Reuters.

The Chengdu-Baoji line remains suspended after a tunnel collapsed and a freight train carrying gasoline caught fire, according to official state news agency Xinhua.

Following the quake, China's State Administration of Work Safety called a halt on infrastructure operations to check for damage.

Underground work was stopped temporarily in Datong, the coal heartland of Shanxi Province, but has since resumed with no disruption to rail transport.
