Chinese Train Collision Caused by Speeding

29 April 2008 16:37

High speed has been blamed for yesterday's train collision in China which left 70 people dead and more than 400 injured, according to state media reports.

According to an investigative panel set up by a State Council, "overspeeding" was to blame for the accident, writes state news agency Xinhua.

The accident happened at a bend in the tracks when a high-speed Beijing train heading for the summer resort of Qingdao derailed, hitting a passenger train going from Yantai to Xuzhou.

The Beijing train was travelling at 131km/hour in an area with an 80km/hour speed limit, Xinhua reports, citing investigators.
