Argentina Opens Bids for US$650m Commuter Line

10 April 2008

Argentina is set to open bidding for a US$650m project to modernise a busy train line, the government has announced.

The project will electrify the state-operated San Martin commuter line linking Buenos Aires to its northern suburbs, writes Reuters.

Other work includes upgrading signalling and other infrastructure along the 35-mile route, currently operated by diesel locomotives.

The government has recently embarked on several rail projects to improve the country's ageing railway network, including the construction of a high-speed link connecting the capital with two other cities.
