French railway SNCF has launched a full-scale takeover bid for transport and logistics firm Geodis to create a large global freight transport company.

SNCF, which already owns 42 percent of Geodis, has valued the bid for the company at €1.1bn.

SNCF Chairman Guillaume Pépy last month announced that he wanted to make SNCF one of the world's top five logistics operators by 2012.
