UK Plans ‘Tram-Train’ Trials

18 March 2008 16:18

The UK has unveiled plans to trial a new form of transport that can travel on both railway tracks and tram lines, expected to reduce wear and tear in addition to reducing passenger journey times.

A fleet of five 'tram-trains' will run on the 37-mile Penistone Line between Huddersfield, Barnsley and Sheffield in the north of England.

The project, a partnership between the Department for Transport (DfT), train operator Northern Rail and rail infrastructure owner Network Rail, will see the two-year trials begin in 2010.

The trials will examine the environmental benefits, operating costs and technical suitability of the vehicles, which are similar to those already operating elsewhere in Europe.
