Greek Strikes Cripple Rail

Industrial action by Greek transport workers entered its third day today as a nationwide strike over government economic reforms crippled government services and airports.

Trade unions called for the strike, affecting the entire passenger network, after the Greek Government pushed through reforms to make the economy more competitive and rescue the country's pension system.

Greek workers say they are outraged by the proposals, which could include raising retirement ages for some jobs and merging scores of pension funds together.

The strikes were organised jointly by the GSEE and ADEDY unions, which jointly represent more than 2.5 million transport workers.
