Roof Riders Targeted in Indonesia

12 February 2008 16:18

Indonesian commuters riding on the roofs of trains will be sprayed with coloured liquid so that security officers can identify and arrest them, according to local media reports.

Commuters to Jakarta and its neighbouring towns often travel on train roofs due to lack of space inside or to avoid paying.

As the authorities lose the battle to stop illegal roof riders, state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api has announced it will douse them with a coloured liquid so officers can arrest them when they disembark, writes the Jakarta Post.

At least 53 commuters travelling on roofs have been killed in the past two years.
