UK Rail Fleet Goes Green In €44m Deal

The UK's London Overground network and Chiltern Railways is to increase its fleet of 'green' trains in a €44m contract.

The twelve DMU Class 172 trains will be produced at Bombardier's Derby plant in the UK before being delivered to rolling stock company Angel Trains, ready for the end of 2009.

The two-car diesel multiple units will provide low-risk step changes in technology as well as meeting latest legislations in emissions, according to Bombardier.

Laing Rail, which owns Chiltern and is a joint owner of London Overground Rail, was taken over by Deutche Bahn yesterday, but the deal remains subject to approval from the UK's Department for Transport, Transport for London and Office of Rail Regulation.

London Overground runs on the north London, west London, Gospel Oak to Barking and the Euston to Watford lines.

From 2011 the service will connect to the extended east London line, providing an orbital service around the city.
