Electronics company Thales has won a contract from train manufacturer Downer EDI Rail to supply information and communications systems on Sydney's passenger rail network.

The contract includes integrating control of the train's information system, brakes, doors, traction, air conditioning and fire detection system on the Sydney Suburban Passenger Vehicle PPP project.

Thales will also provide CCTV surveillance systems, voice and data applications including private radio communications, vehicle positioning system, passenger information and public address.

Downer EDI Rail will build 78 eight-car sets for Sydney's CityRail as part of a AUD$3.6bn project, with the first PPP trains due to enter service in 2010.
