Deutsche Bahn Puts New Wage Offer on the Line

Germany's rail network could be back on track today following months of strikes if drivers decide to accept a new wage offer from rail operator Deutsche Bahn.

Deutsche Bahn is offering a pay rise of between eight and 13 per cent, even though the drivers have demanded increases of up to 31 percent.

The German train drivers' union (GDL), who have called strikes since July, believe its 34,000 drivers are underpaid compared to their European coleagues.

Last week's 62-hour rail strike was Germany's biggest ever, costing the Germany economy about €75m a day.

German opinion polls show that 45 percent of Germans believe Deutsche Bahn is responsible for the strikes while 26 per cent blame the GDL.
