South African Rail Security Gets Hi-tech Boost

17 October 2007 16:53

Railway stations in South Africa could soon be equipped with hi-tech policing vehicles in a bid to step up rail security.

Two Segway personal transporters will be used at two Tshwane stations during a pilot project that could see them being introduced across the country, writes South Africa's Independent Online.

The environmentally friendly vehicles have been designed to increase the speed security guards react to incidents.

This is the first time the Segway will be used at rail stations in the African continent. The vehicles are already widely used across Europe and the US.

The Metrorail national executive committee will review the Segway transporters after the pilot test phase.
