India Re-Designs Freight Wagons

Indian Railways is changing the design of its freight wagons to increase the number of rake-carrying trucks and decrease road transport volume.

The service of carrying trucks is currently in operation, on an experimental basis, on the Mumbai and Goa line on the Konkan Railway system.

Currently, one rake carries 40 wagons while the proposed new designs will accommodate 57 wagons on one trip, according to Indian publication the The Economic Times.

The system is fuel-efficient and is considered a practical alternative in terrorist-prone areas where chances of a truck getting waylaid is much higher, rail officials told the newspaper.

Plans are underway to make this system operational in other parts of the country.
