South African Rail Needs 'Urgent Intervention' in Safety.

Railway safety in South Africa requires urgent and sustained intervention, according to the South African Rail Safety Regulator.

A new report entitled The State of Railway Safety in South Africa reveals a high number of incidents including collisions, derailments and security-related issues.

The report indicates there were 2,950 incidents of collisions and derailments over the last year.

The major contributory factor to accidents is human error, according to Regulator CEO Mosenngwa Mofi talking to the South African Mail and Guardian.

The ageing rail infrastructure has also been identified as playing a role in the poor safety record of the railways.
