Japan Creates First Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Train

The world's first fuel cell hybrid train will go into commercial service this month as Japan moves to curb global warming, say the East Japan Railway company.

The Kiha E200 will be powered by a diesel engine and an electric battery which is recharged from energy created from braking at curves and entering stations. The control system for the fuel cell railcar is based on the diesel hybrid system, but replaces the diesel generator with a fuel cell.

The new technology helps reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and particulate matter by up to 60% compared to conventional trains.

The train, run by the East Japan Railway will begin service in central Japan on July 31.
