Construction work on the first phase of the light rail extension of the UK's Manchester Metrolink to Manchester Airport will begin this month, providing a direct link to the airport.
The 14.5km Metrolink line to Manchester Airport will be a branch of the existing Chorlton line and run on a new track through Northern Moor, Baguley and Wythenshawe to Manchester Airport.
The tramline will run up to Manchester Airport's existing ground transport interchange – the station – which is currently linked by rail, coach and buses from across the north of England, Scotland and Wales.
The metro extension is part of a £1.4bn Metrolink expansion plan that will treble the size of the network with planned extensions to East Didsbury, Ashton under Lyne, Oldham, and Rochdale lines.
