UK to Invite Bidders for HS2 by September

27 July 2011

The UK Government is moving ahead with plans to invite bidders for the £32bn High Speed Two (HS2) project by early September.

The proposed high-speed railway project will run between London and Birmingham and will include a route running from the redesigned Euston station.

The high-speed rail project caused controversy due to cost and fears for the countryside.

Mott MacDonald, Arup, US-based Bechtel and CH2M Hill are expected to submit bids for the project, according to independent.co.uk.

The UK Department for Transport will run a consultation for the project until 29 July this year, and the government's formal decision will be made later this year.

The rail line will allow trains to run at a speed of 155mph, and the Government expects that it will generate benefits of around £44bn for the UK economy.

The first phase of the rail project is planned to be operational by around 2026, followed by a link to Manchester and Leeds by 2032.
