Union Railway expects to start the construction of the UAE Western Region railway project this year, after issuing tenders to more than 20 pre-qualified consortia.
The first phase of the 1,500km railway project is a 270km freight rail line, which will connect Abu Dhabi's Shah sour gas field to Ruwais on the Persian Gulf coast.
The $11bn project will help to provide the transportation of granulated sulfur for the export from its sources in Shah and Habshan to Ruwais from 2013 onwards.
The construction work for the project is scheduled to begin in mid-2011.
