Chinese Firm Eyes London Underground Mobile Network Deal

28 February 2011

Huawei is in the final stages of talks with Transport for London (TfL) in the UK to secure a deal to offer mobile communications equipment to the London Underground.

Huawei has offered to spend £50m ($80.7m) to fund the installation of the network, and has already placed bids.

The Chinese manufacturer is the only bidder in the running for the deal, and would work in association with French aerospace company Thales, including the UK's mobile operators to install the network.

Mobile network operators Vodafone and O2 have also offered to pay for the installation of the transmitters.

TfL has not specified whether the network will be in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games, according to The Sunday Times.
