UK DfT to fund rail improvements in Cornwall

The UK Department of Transport (DfT) announced plans to invest £146.6m in rail improvements across the south-west region of Cornwall.

A total of £9m is being provided by DfT, £29.6m will be secured through Cornwall Council and the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and £103.5m from Network Rail, while the remaining £4.5m will be offered by train operator First Great Western.

Strukton Rail installs POSS monitoring system on London Underground

Strukton Rail is installing its preventive maintenance and fault diagnosis system (POSS) on the London Underground, after completing a successful pilot project at Loughton and Waterloo tube stations.

Strukton Rail had already begun work on connecting 64 points to the POSS monitoring system in March and is scheduled to extend it to additional 29 points in September.

The installation work has been performed as part of a partnership agreement signed between Strukton and Siemens UK in 2010.

UK DfT to fund smartcard technology at Huddersfield station

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) announced its plans to invest £153,000 to upgrade ticket gates at Huddersfield railway station, enabling passengers to use smartcards.

Following the successful launch of London’s Oyster scheme, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority is set to unveil its own version of the smartcard, known as the MCard.

Huawei to equip Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit with eLTE technology

Huawei was selected to install the eLTE urban communication system on the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit in Ethiopia.

The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit project will have an effective three-dimensional communications network infrastructure, as the subsystems will offer multi-service bearing, surveillance, data storage and electrified communications.

The urban mass transit communication system includes multiple technologies, such as fixed network, eLTE wireless network, IP telephony and high-definition video surveillance.

Queensland’s Gold Coast tram system opened on 20 July

Australia’s Queensland Government opened the Gold Coast new light rail system on 20 July.

The $1.2bn Gold Coast Rapid Transit (GCRT) project was jointly funded by state and federal governments, as well as the Gold Coast City council, and covers 14 trams, 16 stations across a 13km rail route.

TfL shortlists bidders to supply electric trains for London Overground routes

Transport for London (TfL) shortlisted four bidders to supply new rolling stock to operate on the London Overground network.

The shortlisted bidders were Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock, Hitachi Rail Europe, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles and Bombardier Transportation.

The winning bidder will supply 39 new four-car, electric, Metro-style trains to operate high-frequency, high-capacity suburban services in and around London.

UK TfL to award £1.4bn contract to MTR to operate Crossrail services

The UK Transport for London (TfL) is to award an eight-year, £1.4bn contract to MTR Corporation (MTR) to serve as a key partner in delivering the new Crossrail services.

The contract comes with an option to extend it to further ten years.

MTR will run Crossrail services between Reading and Heathrow in the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

Los Angeles Metro awards $1.6bn contract for Metro Purple Line extension

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) in the US awarded a $1.6bn contract to a joint venture comprising Skanska, Traylor Bros and J F Shea for the construction of Metro Purple Line extension.

The contract covers the design and construction of a 3.9-mile long extension of the Metro Purple Line subway from Wilshire and Western to Wilshire and La Cienega, where new stations will be constructed.

The contract also includes the installation of train control and signals, communications, traction power supply and distribution, as well as new fare collection systems on the existing Metro Rail system.
