Fluor-led JV begins construction on $5.6bn Purple Line project in US

A Fluor-led joint venture (JV) team started construction of the $5.6bn Purple Line Light Rail project in Maryland, US.

The Purple Line Transit Partners JV team consists of Fluor, Meridiam Infrastructure Purple Line and Star America Purple Line.

The construction project is being carried out on behalf of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), and began with a groundbreaking ceremony.


HS2 seeks construction teams for London stations

High Speed Two (HS2), the company responsible for the development of the UK’s high-speed rail network, launched a bidding process for construction teams to assist in the delivery of new stations at Euston and Old Oak Common in London.

Interested bidders will be able to submit the tenders for both the stations before the end of the year, and the contracts are scheduled to be awarded in the second half of 2018.

Siemens to supply 57 multiple-unit regional trains to DB Regio

Siemens was contracted to deliver 57 Mireo trainsets to Deutsche Bahn’s local transport unit DB Regio.

The contract represents the second order for Siemens’ new regional and commuter train platform following the product’s launch last year.

The train sets will be built at the Siemens’ Krefeld facility in Germany and are set to operate on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn regional suburban rail network.


Québec to invest $263m in new underground train garage

The Government of Québec in Canada is set to invest C$330m ($263m) for the construction of an underground garage for trains at Côte-Vertu station in Montreal.

The new garage will involve a total investment of roughly C$440m ($351m) and is intended to facilitate the replacement of station’s first-generation métro cars.

It is also expected to fulfil the growing transit ridership and extend the network’s Blue line, as well as help with other planned developments.


Bombardier to deliver driverless monorail system to Thailand

Bombardier Transportation secured two contracts to deliver its driverless Innovia Monorail 300 system for two elevated, mass rapid transit lines in Bangkok, Thailand.

The deals were awarded by the Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM) and the Eastern Bangkok Monorail (EBM) respectively, which are to be responsible for the construction and 30-year concession of the new lines.

Bombardier have agreed to provide mechanical and electrical components for the two monorail lines, as well as deliver a total of 72 four-car Innovia Monorail 300 trains.


Construction starts on Malaysia’s $13bn East Coast Rail Link project

China and Malaysia started construction on the $13bn East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in Malaysia, which is being developed as a part of China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative.

The 688km rail line will run through the Peninsular Malaysia, and is expected to connect various ports at the South China Sea towards the Thailand border in the east with the Straits of Malacca’s shipping routes in the west, reported Reuters.


Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi win $360m Dhaka metro rolling stock contract

Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi secured a contract worth nearly JPY40bn ($360m) to supply 144 cars of rolling stock and maintenance depot equipment for Dhaka mass rapid transit (MRT) Line-6 in Bangladesh.

The contract was signed with the Government of Bangladesh-owned Dhaka Mass Transit Company (DMTCL).

Kawasaki will be responsible for overall project management, design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and delivery of the rolling stock and depot equipment under the deal.


London Underground awards $143.7m equipment supply contract

London Underground (LU) awarded a deal worth roughly $143.7m to Bombardier Transportation for new motors and traction control equipment for its Central line train fleet.

Bombardier will also provide ongoing maintenance support under the contract, which is scheduled to continue until 2024.

The project forms a part of LU’s larger Central Line Improvement Programme (CLIP) that aims to address and rectify various operational inefficiencies of the Central line fleet.


Virgin debuts new high-speed Azuma train in Scotland

UK-based train operating company Virgin Trains’ new ‘Azuma’ locomotive travelled for the first time to Scotland as part of a rail connectivity improvement programme between Edinburgh and London.

The maiden run was conducted by manufacturer Hitachi in preparation for the introduction of the 65-train fleet on the east coast route next year.

The new train features increased space for passengers compared to older models, and is expected to reduce the journey time between Edinburgh and London by 22 minutes to roughly four hours.


First track installed at Ontario’s $4.1bn Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Canada

The first track for the C$5.3bn ($4.1bn) Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project was installed, marking a significant step towards providing better transit services to people across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Canada.

The 19km Eglinton Crosstown LRT is scheduled to open in 2021 and will connect Mount Dennis Station in the west with Kennedy Station in the east.

It will comprise 25 stations, three subway stations, three GO Transit lines and the Union Pearson Express.
