A 12 channel ultrasonic inspection system for the inspection of rail wheels has been delivered to the Steel Authority of India's rail wheel factory in Durgapur. This is the second installation of its type on this site, following two similar units at another manufacturing plant in Bangalore.
The system includes a 12 channel multiplexer, with each channel totally independent in terms of gain, filters, gate position and mode. The software provides interfaces with the external wheel handling system, with defective wheels automatically diverted onto a separate handling channel for evaluation.
A 'chart record' type display of each channel shows the signal amplitudes in each monitor gate as the wheel rotates, with the chart record cleared as each new wheel enters the system.
The electronics are housed in a sealed, air conditioned rack, with only the keyboard and mouse accessible in normal operation - these can be locked in place using a specially designed housing.
